This is the first episode of Season 4 and a podcast that helps aspiring leaders unlock their full potential. I'm your host, dr Angela Buckley, triathlete, mother, successful entrepreneur and leadership development expert. As the author of Likeable Leadership Reflection Journal series, I am passionate about helping you overcome obstacles and achieve your goals. And achieve your goals. Today we're going to be diving into a crucial topic how to set ambitious goals, overcome overwhelm and gain clarity on your vision. Whether you're feeling stuck or you simply want to take your leadership journey to the next level, this episode is for you.
01:17
Let's start by talking about the importance of having a clear vision. Many of us go through life without a concrete idea of where we want to be in the long term. We might have short-term goals or vague notions of success, but without a compelling vision, it's easy to feel adrift and overwhelmed by day-to-day challenges. So how do we create a meaningful vision in our lives and careers? Well, here's a few strategies that I've found helpful. Here's a few strategies that I've found helpful.
01:43
One reflect on your values. What matters most to you? What kind of impact do you want to have on the world? Two imagine your ideal future. Where do you see yourselves in 5, 10, even 25 years? Don't be afraid to dream big and don't be afraid to consider a legacy project. That doesn't mean you get it done immediately, but looking down that long term and while you're imagining your ideal future, what does your day-to-day look like? How are you going to have that impact? How are you going to have the flexibility or the agility that you really dream for? Three seek input from others. Ask trusted friends, colleagues or mentors what they see as your strengths and potential contributions.

4. Write it down. Putting your vision on paper makes it tangible and it helps clarify your thoughts. Remember, your vision doesn't have to be set in stone and it can evolve as you grow and gain new experiences. The important thing here is to have a north star guiding your decisions and actions. Now let's talk about goal setting. Once you have a clear vision, it's time to break it down into actionable goals, and that's where many people struggle. They have big dreams, but they don't know how to turn those dreams into reality. The key is to dream big but start small, and let me share for you a personal example as a triathlete.
03:11
As an athlete, one of my big goals was to join the age group Team USA team and represent our country in the highest competitions. Now, I've competed in many half Ironmen, but it wasn't really until 2022,-COVID that I had the time and the opportunity to qualify for a race for Team USA. I have done distances that have included one-mile swims, two-mile swims, 56-mile bike rides, 100-mile bike rides. Sometimes you're running half a marathon. I've never really done the full Ironman because of my time commitments, but all of that has been an incredibly intimidating goal to get done in one day, especially if someone who is starting new and rolling forward. So, instead of getting overwhelmed by the enormity of the challenge, I broke it down into manageable goals. I focused on shorter races, sprint triathlons, and I increased my distances and my strength in each discipline. I set specific targets for each week and month and I celebrated small milestones along the. By taking this approach, I was able to build my skills and confidence over time, especially and eventually achieving my goal of becoming a Team USA Bracer. You can apply these same principles to any big goal in your life or career, whether you want to start a business, earn a promotion or make a significant impact in your community. Break it down into smaller steps. Each small win will build you momentum and keep you motivated.
04:48
Now let's address the elephant in the room overwhelm. It's a common experience for ambitious people, especially when you're juggling multiple responsibilities. Here are some strategies to help you to overcome overwhelm and stay focused on your goals. One prioritize ruthlessly. Use the tools like the Eisenhower Matrix to focus on what's truly important and urgent. Practice saying no and setting your boundaries. Remember every yes to something is also a no to something else. Be highly selective about your commitments, about your commitments.
05:30
Three create systems and routines. Automating and streamlining repetitive tasks can free up mental energy for more important work. Don't get sucked into the decision fatigue routine. Four take care of your physical and mental health. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, stress management techniques like meditation can all boost your resilience. And five seek support. Don't be afraid to ask for help and delegate tasks when possible. Six break these tasks into smaller chunks. Just like with goals, we want to break down these overwhelming tasks into smaller steps that can help them be more manageable for you in your day-to-day.
06:08
Remember, overcoming overwhelm is an ongoing process. It is not eliminating stress entirely, but building the skills and the habits to manage it effectively.
